Appeal to Emotion

As talked about in the Epstein there are a few different parts to Appeal to emotion and they are
-appealing to fear, this is a a way that politicians and advertisers manipulate people
-appeal to spite, the hope and revenge, is invariably rejected as bad by some people on moral grounds. In some cultures though, it is not only acceptable but moral imperative to "get even", to preserve ones "honor"
-appeal to vanity, although i was unable to find a good definition in the book this one is pretty obvious. I believe this is the appeal to something that is good for you.

The one that strikes me the most is appeal to fear. This is the one that is most appealing because this seems to be the best way to get peoples attention.I don’t know if its just me but I tend to be more interested in something if it causes fear. For example, scary movies.Scary movies seem so interesting and that attracts a lot of people.I also think that serious consequences to not doing things such as homework is a good example because the fear stimulates me to get more motivated.

Hope this is helpful to all :)

  1. Your post was very detailed and organized. I like how you defined each of the different types of appeals to emotion. I also like that you chose to talk about appeal to fear. I agree with you in that people are attracted to fear. It's a funny thing how something that is supposed to be scary can make people intrigued and want to know more about it, like a movie. Scary things get a lot of attention such as the movie "Paranormal Activity." People were always talking about how scary that movie was and it got people interested in it and make people wonder what was so scary about it. And the movie did very well because of that.

  2. I like how you went through the various appeals to emotion one by one in your post. Clear explanations of the appeals were given. I liked the way you explained how the appeal for spite is different for some cultures and how “getting even” and “honor” are taken into concern. I agree that the appeal to vanity is the appeal to something that is good for you. The appeal to fear is a widely used appeal and we see it various different media. I think scary movies appeal to a person’s fear too. I agree that the appeal to fear is one the best ways to get a person’s attention.

  3. Wow, very helpful. I love the organization because it can briefly help someone go through the appeals to emotion faster. I also agree with you when you talked about the Appeal to Fear. I also choose that one also. I also agree that it was the best one out of all the Appeals that were given. A lot of companies use that in their advertisements and also a lot of media such as music and movies use them as well. Fear is a strong stimulus and does effect a fair amount of people.
